Hawaii Volcanoes National Park protects 335,259 acres across two active shield volcanoes — Kīlauea, one of the world's most continuously active volcanic systems, and Mauna Loa, Earth's largest subaerial volcano by volume.
Established in 1916 as the eleventh national park in the United States, the site preserves not only raw geological processes but also the cultural landscape of Native Hawaiians who have lived with these volcanoes for centuries. The Jaggar Museum site, though closed since 2018, remains a landmark reference point; the new permanent visitor facilities now anchor interpretation near the park entrance. Chain of Craters Road descends 3,700 feet over nineteen miles, crossing lava flows from eruptions spanning four centuries. For Oahu residents and visitors, inter-island day trips compress this geological theater into a single experience, typically including round-trip flights from Honolulu, ground transport, and guided access to the caldera, rift zones, and lava tube systems that define the park's 24-hour-accessible terrain.
